Philip Frey: A Quiet Eye | at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art

Artists Reception: Wednesday, June 12, 5 - 7 PM

Courthouse Gallery Solo Show: Philip Frey’s new work for his upcoming solo exhibition, A Quiet Eye, is inspired by the landscape, interior spaces, and the figure. In his daily experience, Frey pay close attention to the ephemeral qualities of light, color, and pattern that often go unnoticed. His process involves the use of brushes, palette knives, and squeegees to develop a rich paint surface and abstractions that evoke a sense of momentariness and appreciation for, as Wordsworth wrote, “the life of things.”

Artists Reception: Wednesday, December 6, 5–7pm

The Mind’s Eye: Turning Inward explores the transition from summer to fall and winter. People naturally retreat indoors this time of year physically, and mentally. The hustle and bustle of summer has subsided, the sunlight begins to wane, and the days get shorter, and colder. The Mind’s Eye invites Courthouse Gallery artists, and guest artists, to reflect on this seasonal change, to push boundaries, and to create from within. The results to this challenge are intriguing. Below are comments and statements by a selection of the artists in the show.

Participating Artists: Jeffery Becton, Lise Bécu, Judy Belasco, Ard Berge, Ragna Bruno, Tom Curry, Heidi Daub, Kate Emlen, Elaine Eskesen, Rick Fox, Philip Frey, June Grey, William Irvine, Joseph Keiffer, Philip Koch, Sarah LaFontaine, Rosie Moore, Emily Muir, John Neville, Linda Packard, Stephen Porter, Alison Rector, Robert Shillady, Lilian Day Thorpe.

Philip Frey: Rejoicing in Color

Artist’s Reception, July 27, 6 - 8:30 PM

Edgewater Gallery presents Philip’s Frey’s solo exhibition with an artist’s reception, Thursday, July 27, 6-8:30 pm. “My latest body of work explores the inter-relationship of the formal elements of a piece, novel paint application to evoke motion, and my joyful approach to painting. In certain pieces, I deliberately call forth more playfulness with the introduction of new ‘characters’ and degrees of abstraction.” Annaliese Jakimides writes, “Philip is a teller of the story of place. He is imprinted with it - not merely physical place but something more akin to its interiority and the energy that illuminates it. And so, therefore, are his paintings, whether they be of docks and boats, landscapes, living rooms and staircases, or flowers from his meticulously tended garden.”

Artist’s Reception, June 21, 5 - 7 PM

Courthouse Gallery Fine Art will present a group exhibition featuring Philip Frey’s recent paintings. The show runs from June 12 to July 7, 2023 with an Artist’s Reception, Wednesday, June 21, 5-7 pm. Geometric shapes illuminated by sunlight form the basis of Philip Frey’s complex deconstruction of recognizable scenes. He masterfully balances the duality of realism and abstraction.

“Frey is a teller of the story of place. He’s imprinted with it—not merely physical place but something more akin to its interiority and the energy that illuminates it. And so, therefore, are his paintings, whether they be of docks and boats, landscapes, living rooms and staircases, or flowers from his meticulously tended garden. [His show] allows us to wander through a deep Frey world. Open and timeless.” - Annaliese Jakimides

PLEIN AIR 2021

Join us for Plein Air 2021, our second annual celebration of plein air painting. This year eight of Edgewater’s established painters will bring brushes and paints, canvases and palettes out of their studios, and into the great outdoors to immerse themselves in the landscape and create paintings that reflect the immediacy of each artist’s emotional response to and interpretation of, their chosen composition. The spontaneity and improvisation that are part of painting en plein air add a unique quality to the finished piece. Visitors will witness this exciting process as they explore the picturesque town of Middlebury, discovering artists, watching them work, engaging them in conversation, and having the opportunity to purchase new paintings off the easel.

ARTIST TALK WITH TIM HORN
Horn will discuss his process from Plein Air to studio work and his presentation will include a slideshow. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public but we ask that you register by calling 802-458-0098 or by emailing info@edgewatergallery-vt.com.
